Vascular (Blood Vessels)
The vascular department is a multidisciplinary team who provide out-patient and in-patient care for people with diseases of the circulation. The main team comprises vascular surgery and interventional radiology, but we work closely with diabetes medicine, cardiology and the stroke and rehabilitation teams to ensure our patients get complete care.
We manage diseases of the arteries, veins and lymphatics. This management maybe conservative (using physical treatments or drugs), percutaneous/ minimally invasive (angioplasty, stenting, some venous treatments, such as injections or laser treatment), or where necessary surgery.
The conditions we commonly treat are aneurysms (swollen arteries), poor circulation (narrowed or blocked arteries), leg ulcers, venous disease and varicose veins, lymphodema and leg swelling and excessive sweating. We also operate to prevent strokes.
We provide a Somerset wide service, with out-patient clinics at Musgrove Park Hospital and Yeovil District hospitals, and at the community hospitals in Bridgwater, Chard, West Mendip, Minehead and Burnham on Sea. The majority of operations or procedures are performed in Taunton.
Diseases of the arteries can present acutely as emergencies. We at part of a cross counties rota with North Devon, which ensures all vascular cases are managed by a specialist with an interest in vascular conditions.
