Stroke

FAST Poster

Acute stroke is a medical emergency.

To recognise stroke, use the FAST test:

F – is there any facial weakness? (Can the patient smile?)

A – is there any arm weakness? (Can they raise both arms?)

S – is their speech normal? (Talk to them)

T – Time to call 999

 

 

The stroke service provides:

Stroke Thrombolysis

This is the “clot-busting” treatment for a proportion of stroke patients who reach hospital within three hours of stroke.

Acute care of patients admitted with stroke

Dunkery stroke unit specialises in the care of people after stroke. It is staffed by a team of specialist doctors, nurses and therapy staff.

Supported discharge service

This is a specialist stroke multidisciplinary team who can provide ongoing stroke rehabilitation at home after discharge from the stroke unit.

Outpatient clinics

Assessment, treatment and review for patients with minor stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA). Follow-up of patients discharged from the stroke unit.

Recruitment of stroke patients into national clinical trials as part of the national stroke research network.
