Restorative Dentistry (Teeth)
Restorative dentistry involves the care of patients who require the restoration of the oral and dental tissues.
Priority is given to certain patient groups, namely congenital cleft lip and palate, developmental disorders, craniofacial and oncology.
People are keeping their teeth longer and have ever increasing expectations of dentistry. Maintaining healthy teeth and oral tissues may involve complex care, often involving more than one specialty such as orthodontics, oral and maxillofacial surgery or plastic surgery. Much of this work involves multidisciplinary care and the treatment is planned jointly.

The department's specialties includes:

  • Fixed and Removable Prosthodontics (crowns, bridges and dentures, including dental implants) - this deals mainly with the prosthetic replacement of hard and soft tissues using crowns, bridges, dentures and implants, such as post cancer/radiotherapy, management of cleft lip and palate defects, severe hypodontia (more than six congenitally missing teeth), and treatment of severe tooth wear.
  • Periodontics (gums) - this includes the treatment of patients with severe gum disease, bone and soft tissue grafting around teeth and  dental implants, drug-induced gingival overgrowth.
  • Endodontics (root canal therapy / removal of dental nerve) - the branch of dental sciences dealing with health, injuries to and diseases of the pulp and periradicular region, and their relationship with systemic well-being and health.

The restorative dentistry service is also here to provide advice on diagnosis and treatment planning for the patient's dentist to undertake as well as treatment of those priority groups who require complex dental care that is considered too specialised for the patient's dentist.
