Orthopaedics (Bones)

Orthopaedics focuses on injuries and diseases of your body's musculoskeletal system. This complex system includes your bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, muscles, and nerves and allows you to move, work and be active.

Our trauma and orthopaedic department has a multidisciplinary approach to care, with our consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and social workers all working together for one purpose – the benefit of our patients.

The department offers a comprehensive service for emergency trauma and planned orthopaedic surgery including:

  • Primary and revision hip replacement
  • Primary and revision knee replacement
  • Spinal surgery
  • Shoulder surgery
  • Hand and elbow surgery
  • Arthroscopies (key-hole surgery for joints)
  • Ligament reconstruction in the knee
  • Foot and ankle surgery

As one of our patients, you will be in hospital for as short a time as possible. The length of your hospital stay will vary depending on your treatment but you will not be sent home until we feel you are safe and comfortable. The ongoing average length of stay for both hips and knees at Musgrove Park Hospital is 4 days.

Many of our minor procedures are now carried out as a day case in our day surgery centre.

We currently have three ultra clean air orthopaedic theatres, providing an average of 850 joint replacements per year as well as spinal procedures and more minor surgery.
