What is orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontic treatment usually involves the wearing of braces (removable or fixed), often the extraction of teeth, and very occasionally jaw surgery.

What are the main reasons for having orthodontic treatment?

  • To improve the appearance of the teeth and face.
  • To improve the health of the teeth and gums.
  • To improve function, i.e. to make it easier to eat.

How long does treatment take?

The average length of treatment for an individual who requires extractions followed by upper and lower fixed braces is usually 18-24 months. Treatment times will however vary from 6 to 30 months depending on the nature of the problem. Orthodontic retainers need to be worn on completion of treatment in order to reduce the likelyhood of the teeth returning to their original positions.
