Medical Assessment Unit
The medical assessment unit (MAU) is an essential part of the larger medical unit. Patients are usually sent to us from the emergency department and from their GPs. Our role is to provide a timely and effective evaluation and to initiate a patient’s treatment. We see patients with a wide variety of complaints.
We have a triage area where patients will start their evaluation. They will have their observations checked (pulse, blood pressure etc), an ECG will be performed (a heart study) amongst other tests. They may have an X-ray performed. They will then be moved to the ward area to see a doctor. We have 22 beds to review and treat our patients in.
We are often able to discharge the patient home to complete their treatment. If the patient needs hospital care then they will be transferred to an appropriate ward.
