Gastrointestinal Surgery

Gastrointestinal surgery covers two specialties of general surgery (upper gastrointestinal surgery and colorectal surgery), both of which are delivered at Musgrove Park Hospital.

Upper gastrointestinal (GI) surgery

This speciality covers surgery on the oesophagus (gullet), stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder and small intestine. The team includes three consultants, a senior fellow, two specialty registrars, a research fellow, and two foundation doctors together with two specialist nurses and four specialist dieticians. There is a large supporting multidisciplinary team which includes anesthetists, endocrinologists, gastroenterologists, psychologists, oncologists, radiologists and histopathologists.

Within Upper GI, there are subspecialities of oesophagogastric surgery, hepatopancreatobiliary surgery and bariatric surgery. Benign surgery of all types is carried out in Musgrove but the team here at Musgrove specialises in weight loss surgery (baratric surgery). Indeed Musgrove has the biggest specialist unit for bariatric surgery in the South West, and one of the biggest in the country, accepting referrals from throughout the region. Please click here for more details.

In addition, the upper GI team at Musgrove also provides surgery for:

• Gastro-oesophageal reflux

• Gall bladder disease

• Hernias

• Other benign oesophageal and gastric disorders

• Other benign pancreatic and hepatobiliary disorders

The vast majority of upper gastrointestinal surgery is carried out laparoscopically (keyhole surgery).

Together with our gastroenterology and colorectal surgery colleagues, we provide an endoscopy service (including gastroscopy and ERCP). Please click here for more details on these.

Patients with upper gastrointestinal cancer (of the liver, oesophagus, stomach and pancreas) are usually investigated at Musgrove Park and may be treated here with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, however those suitable to undergo surgery generally travel to Bristol to have that carried out at the specialist cancer unit there.

Colorectal surgery

The colorectal service comprises four consultants, an associate specialist, a staff grade doctor, two specialist registrars and three colorectal specialist nurses together with a large supporting multidisciplinary team including stoma care nurses and clinical nurse practioners. The majority of elective colorectal patients are offered laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery and an enhanced recovery programme has been established with excellent results.

We provide a comprehensive service that includes inpatient and outpatient care for all colorectal conditions including:

  • Colorectal cancers
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pelvic floor dysfunction (for faecal incontinence)
  • Benign colorectal conditions including diverticular disease, perianal fistulae, polyps
  • We offer a 'fast track' service for the diagnosis of colorectal cancers and we are an accredited centre for colorectal cancer (bowel), and all the bowel surgeons have wide ranging skills in all aspects of bowel problems.

Together with our gastroenterology colleagues we provide an endoscopy service (including gastroscopy and colonoscopy and bowel cancer screening). Please click here for more details on these.

Emergency general surgery

With the vascular surgeons the upper GI and colorectal surgeons provide a full and comprehensive general surgical emergency service.
