The Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Department provides comprehensive care for patients with upper and lower gastro-intestinal, hepato-biliary and pancreatic disorders, and consists of eight gastroenterology consultants, as well as two IBD specialist nurses, two upper GI cancer nurses, two nutrition nurse, two hepatology nurses, four nurse endoscopists (upper & lower, including Bowelscope cancer screening), one nurse GI physiologist and four bowel cancer screening programme (BCSP) practitioners. We work in close collaboration with our GI surgical colleagues (seven colo-rectal surgeons, four upper GI/bariatric surgeons), as well as the radiology team (including percutaneous transhepatic cholangiographic drainage; PTCD) and the dietetics department at Musgrove Park.

Our Endoscopy Department provides diagnostic & therapeutic gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy and colonoscopy, including polyp-removal (EMR) and argon-plasma coagulation therapy (APC), as well as ERCP (including pancreatic), gastro-intestinal stenting (upper and lower GI-tract), small bowel capsule & single balloon enteroscopy (SBE), oesophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) & pH studies, urea & hydrogen breath testing. With the expansion of bowel cancer screening (NHS Bowelscope, age 55 years, and FOB-colonoscopy programmes, age 60-75 years), we have lately performed more than 12,000 procedures per annum in our 3-room endoscopy unit at Musgrove Park Hospital (ERCP and GI stenting provision in radiology department and theatres) and 1-room community-based endoscopy unit at Bridgwater Hospital, using high-definition Olympus (EVIS LUCERA, including narrow-band imaging) and Pentax (in Bridgwater) endoscopes. We will be starting with naso-endoscopy in the second half of 2018.
