Fracture Liaison Service

The Fracture Liaison Service (FLS) was developed to systematically identify, investigate and refer to appropriate services all eligible patients over 50 years within the local areas who have suffered a fragility fracture, with the aim of reducing their risk of suffering another fall or fracture.

Patients are identified within our fracture clinic outpatient department, accident and emergency department and via inpatient referrals. Patient’s risk of osteoporosis is assessed using a bone health questionnaire. This is reviewed by our Fracture Liaison Specialist Practitioner and if appropriate, referred for bone density scans (DEXA) and followed up in fracture liaison clinics or at their G.P to assess their bone health.

The department consists of a Fracture Liaison Nurse Specialist and a Fracture Liaison Service Administrator. The department is located on the first floor of the Duchess building. Clinics are run on Wednesday's and Thursday's with telephone follow-up throughout the week.

The FLS work to provide the five clinical standards – the 5IQ approach working within this frame work we can achieve long-term benefit to our fracture patients.
