Critical Care

The 12-bedded critical care unit comprises 6 refurbished intensive therapy beds and 6 high dependency beds delivering critical care to patients of all ages with serious life-threatening illness. A critical care outreach team assists in the management of ill patients on the wards.

The critical care team is led by eight consultants, more than 65 nursing staff, and representatives from all the allied specialities including microbiology, physiotherapy, radiology, nutrition, pharmacy and speech and language. The critical care unit provides advanced medical procedures including artificial renal support, advanced respiratory and cardiac support and deals with a large number of medical and surgical patients who are suffering from severe infections and other medical problems. It is also able to look after children should the need arise.

In many instances patients will be monitored with complex methods, but the team will always try to keep them comfortable and pain free. The staff will always do their utmost to ensure that good communication is maintained, as this is a stressful time for patients and relatives.

We recognise the importance of visitors and welcome the support that the next of kin can give. Due to the effects of critical illness and, to enable the staff to deliver the care required, we are only able to accommodate two visitors at the bedside at any one time. We discourage visits between the hours of 13.00 and 14.30 to provide a 'quiet' rest hour for the patients. There is always a named nurse looking after each patient, if you have any queries about visiting please feel free to ring and ask to speak to the relevant nurse or the nurse in charge.

Further information can be obtained from the intensive care unit (01823 342006) or high dependency unit (01823 343808) as to the most appropriate time to visit.
A relatives area is provided but because of the limited seating this is reserved strictly for relatives of patients on either ICU or HDU only.
