Clinical Research

Clinical research is the way we determine what the best ways are to prevent, diagnose or treat disease. Taunton & Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is committed to this endeavour, and at any one time there are approximately 250 active research projects going on in the hospital.

Many of our staff are involved in conducting or supporting this research, particularly the National Institute for Health Research’s (NIHR) portfolio of research, and providing patients, and in some cases carers and staff, the opportunity to participate in national studies that are of relevance to them.

Consequently, it is possible that you may be approached to participate in a research project and we hope that you would consider this. In some cases it may be as simple as completing a questionnaire, or giving an extra blood sample, or it may be more complex involving additional clinical tests or taking different medication. However, participation is always voluntary and you may refuse, or withdraw at any time without the need to give a reason and without it affecting your normal care.

In order to be sure that all the research meets high and safe standards, regulatory requirements and national guidance, all projects are checked by the Department of Clinical Research before being authorised. This includes confirming that each project has been reviewed by a committee of the National Research Ethics Service (NRES).

For patients, members of the public and clinicians, we have set out information about the non-commercial NIHR portfolio studies that are currently seeking participants in the Trust. For researchers, we have set out further information on how the Department of Clinical Research can help you.
