I qualified in 1990 from Charing Cross and Westminster Medical School, London. After junior doctor roles I taught anatomy and physiology at Sheffield University whist studying for the first part of my surgical fellowship for the Royal College of Surgeon (FRCS) exams.

I completed a post in the emergency department at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford and then gained a place on the Bristol senior house officer (junior doctor) surgical rotation. After completing the FRCS examinations I was appointed to the Bristol Surgical Training Programme for orthopaedics and received most of my basic orthopaedic training in Bristol.

During my training, I published a number of research papers and continue to have a special interest in research about the use of total hip replacement to treat hip fractures.

After completing my general orthopaedic training and specialist orthopaedic FRCS examinations, I went on to develop my sub-speciality interest in revision hip and knee arthroplasty (surgical repair of joints) doing a hip and knee Fellowship at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. (The Ling fellowship.) Further experience was gained working for specialist orthopaedic surgeons, Professor Learmonth and Mr Evert Smith in Bristol.

In 2003, I was appointed to a consultant position joining the arthroplasty unit at Musgrove Park Hospital. Since this appointment I have concentrated on hip and knee surgery.
