Our pharmacy department is modern and purpose built, using a state-of-the-art robotic dispensing system and pneumatic tube distribution system.

We have around fifty staff, including pharmacists, technicians, assistants and clerical staff who all work together as one team, to provide all the pharmacy services needed.

The pharmacy services we provide include:

  • Dispensing medicines (for inpatients, discharge and outpatients).  The pharmacy dispensary is fully computerised, to ensure the provision of a fast and efficient patient service. The average wait for an outpatient prescription is about 25 minutes.
  • Purchasing and distributing medicines to wards and clinics.
  • Clinical pharmacy services: specialist pharmacist support at ward level to ensure the safe, effective and economic use of medicines.
  • Preparation of chemotherapy, for cancer and haematology patients.
  • Medicines information: providing information and advice on all aspects of drug therapy to health care professionals working here at Musgrove.

In addition we also:

  • Provide advice and guidance on the cost-effective use of medicines, to enable the hospital to manage its drugs budget;
  • Work with  primary care to agree a common range of drugs to be used by hospital doctors and GPs (a formulary);
  • Provide a telephone ‘helpline’ for discharged patients who have questions about their discharge medication;
  • Contribute to the education and training of medical, nursing and pharmacy colleagues;
  • Work closely with consultants in microbiology and infection control, to ensure the most appropriate use of antibiotics;
  • Manage the supply of medicines for clinical trials undertaken here at Musgrove.
