Foundation trust Members and Governors

Foundation trust Members and Governors

What is a Foundation Trust?

  • Foundation trusts are NHS organisations accountable to the public through its membership.
  • Foundation trusts are able to make better and more flexible use of money, helping to plan for future investments, supporting developments and improving local services.

Your Data Matters to Us

Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust is registered with the Information Commissioner to use the information we hold for advertising, marketing and public relations purposes.   For public relations purposes we may, from time to time, contact you to ask for your help and advice in improving our services.

The data you supply to us as a Member will remain confidential and will be managed  and stored in accordance with the Data Protection Act (2018) on the Trust’s foundation trust membership database.  The basis for processing your data is that it is necessary for compliance with a legal obligation that the hospital has as a foundation trust.

The information you provide will only be used to contact you about Trust membership-related activities, e.g. contacting you about events, circulating newsletters and governor election information/voting packs (these are sent out by the Trust’s current provider, the Electoral Reform Services).

For further information about the Trust’s updated privacy policy, you can access the policy on our website at the address below, or you can contact the Membership Support Officer on 01823 342511, who will send it to you:

Your data will be held on our foundation trust members’ database until such a time you advise us that you no longer wish to remain a member.  Please contact Carol Lydiate, Governor and Membership Support Officer, on 01823 342511 or if at any time you would like to be removed from the Membership list.

Information on becoming a Governor

Members elect a Council of Governors who represent them and have a responsibility to communicate with them. Governors on that council meet four times a year and appoint the Non-Executive Directors to the Trust Board. Governors agree the long term strategy of the Trust, approve the appointment of a Chief Executive and agree the terms and conditions for the Chair and Non-Executive Directors.

For further information, or to stand for election as a Governor, please email Carol Lydiate, Governor and Membership Support Officer, on, or ring her on 01823 342511.

Members are organised into four public and one staff constituency.
