Musgrove Park to get new state-of-the-art linear accelerators - 22 March 2019

Over the next two years the three linear accelerators at Musgrove Park Hospital’s Beacon Centre are being replaced so patients will have access to state of the art equipment and high quality treatment for their cancer. A linear accelerator is the device most commonly used for external beam radiation treatments for patients with cancer. It is used to treat all parts/organs of the body by delivering high-energy x-rays or electrons to the region of the patient's tumour.

While the work to upgrade the linear accelerators takes place Musgrove’s capacity will be temporarily reduced to running two machines at one time so from this week we have changed the hours of operation. Whereas before the machines would be used Monday – Friday, 9am – 5:30pm, they are now used Monday – Saturday, from 7am – 9pm. Patients will be notified as part of their individual appointment letters.

A huge thank you to staff in the radiotherapy team for being so flexible in changing the hours they work to ensure we can still meet patient demand. We expect the first new linear accelerator will go live in September this year.

We’d also like to thank the Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy Equipment (SURE) charity for its continued generosity in raising money for equipment at the Beacon Centre.
