New radial lounge creates calming environment for Musgrove Park patients - 26 July 2019

New radial lounge creates calming environment for Musgrove Park patients - 26 July 2019

A new radial lounge at Musgrove Park Hospital was officially opened today (Monday 22 July), creating a calmer, more comfortable environment for patients visiting the Cardiology department.

Radial Lounge 1

The state-of-the-art lounge was funded by the hospital’s official charity, Love Musgrove, following a fundraising appeal to raise £68,000 to complete the works. The department delivers 1,000s of angiograms and Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) procedures each year, which traditionally was delivered through the groin in theatre. Patients were then nursed after in a bed, resulting in longer recovery times and bed space being used for longer periods of time.

The new radial lounge creates a more relaxing and comfortable environment for the patient, by removing beds and replacing them with eight treatment chairs for patients to use before and after the procedures. This also reduces treatment and recovery times, increasing the number of patients the department can see in one day from 10 to 14 per session.

Mohammad Sahebjalal, cardiology consultant, has been at the forefront of the campaign for the new Radial Lounge. He said: “Opening the radial lounge is a huge achievement for the whole department. It’s a big change, but a change for the better, allowing patients to benefit from a more homely environment when they come in for treatment. A number of our patients have already used the lounge, and agree they feel more relaxed when they come into the department – and that the colourful chairs cheer them up!

“The change to chairs from beds will also free up space in the department, meaning we can treat more patients, faster than ever. The team have worked hard to make this happen, and it’s brilliant to see it up and running.”

Zoe Steer, Love Musgrove’s Head of Fundraising, attended the official opening of the lounge. She said: “Thanks to the generosity of everyone who donated or got involved in our fundraising events, we have been able to deliver the brand new radial lounge, improving the experience for all patients. We are very excited to see the radial lounge open – and in use already!” Further donations to the Love Musgrove Fund are always welcome.

The cardiology department at Musgrove Park Hospital provides a range of secondary care cardiac investigative and treatment options, and runs both general and specialist clinics.
