Women in South Somerset to get important breast screening appointment at South Petherton Hospital - 30 August 2018

Women across South Somerset, who are between 50 and 70 years of age, will soon be invited for their regular breast screening appointment.

This year the NHS breast screening mobile unit, run by clinicians from Musgrove Park Hospital, will be located at the modern South Petherton Community Hospital in a move away from its previous position at the old builder’s yard in Martock.

Dr Sarah Perrin, consultant radiologist and Somerset breast screening programme director at Musgrove Park Hospital, explained:

“We are pleased to be able to offer this vital service from a far more accessible venue.

“While we are very grateful to the builder’s yard in Martock for allowing us to use their car park/builders yard for screening clinics, we wanted to take this opportunity to improve the environment for the women who come to see us for an appointment.

“By using South Petherton Community Hospital to host our mobile unit we will have access  for better parking facilities and improved access for women who want to arrange early morning and evening breast screening appointments.”

Dr Perrin, urged women aged between 50 and 70 to take advantage of the free breast screening appointment.

“In Somerset we benefit from being part of the Age X clinical trial where women aged between 47 - 49 and 71 - 73 are also invited to be screened.

“Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and about 12,000 women die from the disease every year.

“In about 96 out of every 100 women screened the mammogram will show no signs of cancer, but about four in 100 are asked back for further potentially life-saving tests. Of these women about 1 in 4 are diagnosed with cancer and need further treatment.

“It’s simple – screening saves lives because cancers are diagnosed and treated earlier than they would have been without screening.”

Women aged between 50 and 70 who live in South Somerset will get an invitation for a screening appointment in the next few months.

Those who are over 70 will not be routinely invited for a screening appointment, but can book one by calling the breast screening office on 01823 342425.
