Musgrove Park Hospital supports Macmillan’s World’s Biggest Coffee Morning - 19 September 2014

The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is cancer charity Macmillan's biggest fundraising event, where they ask people from across the UK to hold a coffee morning to raise money for people living with cancer. In 2013, 154,000 people signed up, raising a record £20 million, and this year looks set to be bigger than ever.

Ward 9, part of the Hope Directorate at Musgrove Park Hospital, invites you to make time for what matters in life by joining their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning on Friday, 26th September, which will take place in the Beacon Centre from 10am until 3pm.

The Beacon Centre has been taking part in the World’s Biggest Coffee morning for the past six years, and this year they’ve got even more exciting plans for the event.

“There’s going to be a raffle, bottle tombola, book stall, quizzes and of course lots of cakes,” explains Suzanne Griffiths, Senior Staff nurse on Ward 9.

“It is a lovely event and like a giant reunion, because we invite patients who have had treatment with us in the past and are back living a normal life, to come along as well as current patients and their families. It is also popular with hospital staff, who have always been so encouraging and supportive of the fundraising event.”

The World’s Biggest Coffee morning event first started in 1990, when a local fundraising committee decided to hold a coffee morning where people came along to meet and mingle - as they might ordinarily do - but donate the cost of their coffee to Macmillan in the process.

The idea seemed such a simple, yet effective one that they suggested the model be taken up nationally. The first National World’s Biggest Coffee Morning was in 1991, when 2,600 people registered to hold coffee mornings across the country. Since then it has raised over £113 million in total for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Musgrove Park Hospital’s coffee morning will be taking place on Friday, 26th September in the Beacon Centre from 10am until 3pm. Staff, patients and members of the general public are all welcome.
