Musgrove Park Hospital staff will be taking part in this year’s Movember campaign - 29 October 2014

Expect to see some interesting facial hair at Taunton’s Musgrove Park Hospital over the next few weeks, during the month of ‘Movember’ (November).

The Movember Foundation is the leading global organisation committed to changing the face of men's health. They achieve this by challenging men (known as Mo Bros) to grow moustaches during Movember (November) to raise money and spark conversations for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.MG866 Made In Movember Campaign Photos 2014 Media Images Portrait 1 Lowres RGB Logo

Thanks to the support of more than four million moustache-growing men, over the past few years Movember has raised £345 million and funded over 800 programmes in 21 countries, and this year’s campaign looks set to have more participants than ever before.

Men can sign up to take part in the challenge at Movember.com. The rules are that you begin clean-shaven on the 1 November and let your moustache grow throughout the whole of November. You can ask friends and family to take part and grow their own moustache or to sponsor you while you grow yours.

Raising awareness for men’s health is so important. In the UK the average life expectancy for men is almost four years less than women. Men have a 14% higher risk of developing cancer, and a 37% higher risk of dying from it. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK, and every hour, a man in the UK dies from prostate cancer. Movember aims to tackle these statistics and make sure the numbers reduce.

Movember’s not just for men. Women who support men’s health, known as Mo Sistas, are an important part of Movember’s success. They get involved in the same way as men, except they don’t need to grow a moustache. They sign up at Movember.com, start a team, recruit the men in their lives to participate, donate, fundraise, plan and participate in events. Most importantly they rally the men they know to join the movement, grow moustaches and have important conversations about men’s health.

If you would like to support Musgrove Park Hospital’s staff as they take on the ‘Mo’ to raise money for this very important cause, please contact the Communications Team to find out which departments will be taking part. (Communications@tst.nhs.uk)
