Taunton and Somerset NHS Foundation Trust (Musgrove Park Hospital) is delighted to announce that Dr Sam Barrell has been appointed as its new Chief Executive.1Dr Sam Barrell

This appointment follows an announcement in September by current Chief Executive Jo Cubbon that she intends to retire in the New Year.

Dr Barrell is currently Chief Clinical Officer at South Devon and Torbay Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG). As well as her role at the CCG, Dr Barrell has continued as senior partner at her GP practice, and she has previously worked as an anaesthetist in large acute trusts in London and the South East.

She was appointed after an extensive recruitment process, with significant input from colleagues across the hospital, and from other stakeholders.

Musgrove Park Hospital’s Chairman, Colin Drummond, said: “I am delighted to announce the appointment of Dr Sam Barrell as the new Chief Executive of Musgrove Park Hospital.

“She comes to us with a very wide background in a range of NHS organisations and has particular expertise in developing a more integrated patient-centred healthcare system. This will be important to Musgrove Park Hospital as we work towards more joined up services for the people of Somerset.

“I know that she will add real value to our hospital and the broader Somerset community and provide great leadership in what will be a very challenging time for the NHS as a whole.”

Dr Barrell said: “I am thrilled to be joining Musgrove Park Hospital as Chief Executive. I have patient care as my absolute priority, and I know Musgrove has excellent staff to deliver this.

“It is a high performing hospital, but also one facing some significant challenges and opportunities over the next few years. I look forward to working with colleagues across the organisation to ensure it continues to deliver really high quality care and treatment to the people of Somerset.”

Dr Barrell is a member of The King’s Fund General Advisory Council, NHS England’s Innovation, Health and Wealth Implementation Board, and the Institute for Public Policy Research Health Advisory Board. She was also named as one of HSJ’s ‘Top 50 most inspirational women in Healthcare’. She was awarded a CBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours this summer for her services to clinical commissioning and integrated care

A timescale for Dr Barrell to start is being agreed.
