Sainsbury’s picks the Beacon Centre as its charity of the year - 20 August 2014

Sainsbury’s supermarket at Taunton’s Hankridge Farm has teamed up with Musgrove Park Hospital’s charity Love Musgrove to raise money for the Beacon Centre.

The Beacon Centre opened for patients in May 2009 to provide cancer treatment to people living in Somerset and the surrounding area, and means that approximately 1,200 cancer patients each year no longer need to travel the long distance to Bristol for their radiotherapy treatment.

The development of the Beacon Centre has been partly made possible by the massive support of the local community, who has raised over two million pounds towards equipment. However, the costs to run the facility and a desire to always expand the cancer treatment options means the Beacon Centre is always grateful for ongoing donations from fundraisers.

For this reason it is fantastic that Sainsbury’s has chosen the Beacon Centre as its charity of the year.

Love Musgrove fundraising manager, Nikki Cripps, said: “We are absolutely delighted that Sainsbury’s has chosen to support Musgrove Park Hospital’s Beacon Centre this year. We have some fun and exciting fundraising ideas already lined up with them, like a car wash and bake sale, and we believe this will be a really rewarding partnership that will ultimately lead to improving the care we can provide to our patients.”

The money raised by the team at Sainsbury’s will help to continually improve and enhance the care experienced by patients who attend the Beacon Centre.

Sainsbury’s Hankridge Farm store manager, Lyndon Brown, said: “We’re delighted to have chosen a charity which has touched so many of our colleagues’ hearts. We will now be working closely with the charity to ensure they really benefit from being our local charity for the next 12 months.”

There will always be further advances in medicine and technology and charitable donations enable the Beacon Centre to remain a centre of excellence for cancer patients across Somerset.
