Musgrove receives high rating in new patient-led food and environment test - 17 October 2013

A new patient-led assessment of hospitals’ care environment has placed Musgrove Park Hospital above the national average in all areas.

The Patient-led Assessment of the Care Environment (PLACE) assessments put patient views at the centre of the assessment process for a hospital’s cleanliness, catering, privacy, dignity and wellbeing and condition and appearance. It replaces the previous Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) inspections in April 2013.
The assessments, which are led by NHS England, take place every year with patients and community representatives making up at least 50 per cent of the assessment team.
The assessment for Musgrove Park Hospital took place in 8th April and looked at:
•               The condition – inside and outside – of the building(s), fixtures and fittings
•               How clean the environment is
•               How well the building meets the needs of those who use it, for example through signs and car parking                         facilities
•               The quality and availability of food and drinks
•               How well the environment supports people’s privacy and dignity
Following the inspection the hospital received the following scores:

  Musgrove Park Hospital National Average
Cleanliness 96.17% 95.74%
Food and Hydration 91.27% 84.98%
Privacy, Dignity and wellbeing 90.82% 88.87%
Condition, Appearance and Maintenance 90.82% 88.75%

PLACE Leads for Musgrove Park Hospital Phil Shelley and Wendy Sims said: “We are really pleased to have done so well in the new PLACE assessments as it is led by our patients and community representatives and is much more in depth than the previous PEAT inspections.
“The assessment gave us a real opportunity to see where we are doing things well and the areas where we can make improvements to the environment and quality of care we deliver.”
