Leadership Matters at Musgrove Park Hospital - 29 August 2013

Musgrove Park Hospital’s Leadership Matters project has been named runner up in the Healthcare People Management Association (HPMA) Excellence Awards.

The HPMA Excellence Awards recognise and reward outstanding work in healthcare and human resource management and the Leadership Matters programme was named runner up in the Healthcare performance award for best coaching and personal development.

Members of Musgrove Park Hospital’s Learning and Development team attended the awards ceremony, which took place at The Brewery in London in June, to receive the accolade.

In 2010, the Hospital recognised that the key to the next stage of its development was to unlock the potential of employees. This included looking for ways it could improve performance in the midst of a difficult economic situation that was unlikely to change for some time.

Louise Netto, Head of Learning and Development said: “Musgrove’s learning and development team designed a development strategy programme called Leadership Matters, which assisted with the delivery of these priorities.

“The key to success was that the programme brought managers and senior doctors together to learn and break down boundaries and focus on engaging everyone as one team.”

The Healthcare Performance award for best coaching and personal development is an award which acknowledges effective investment in the development of people through coaching to maximise the potential of individuals, and teams to the benefit of patients through improved performance.

Louise continued: “We are extremely proud to be a runner up for the Healthcare Performance award for best coaching and personal development. We were shortlisted from 26 applications and made it through to the final three with our project, which is a fantastic achievement.”

The judges were impressed with how the hospital’s executive team had engaged with the programme and how participants had been converted in to enablers, leading at every level. They presented the Learning and Development Team with a glass plaque to symbolise their achievement.
