Chairman welcomes new Non-Executive Director - 03 April 2013

Former Navy Rear Admiral Brian Perowne has been appointed as a new Non-Executive Director at Musgrove Park Hospital.

Brian Perowne brings a wealth of experience and expertise to Musgrove, both from his days as Chief Executive of the Naval Bases and Supply Agency managing and supporting 12,000 staff and controlling a budget of £750 million; as well as leading a large organisation in the social care charitable sector.

Following a very successful career in Royal Navy operations, communications, logistics and nuclear support, which took him around the world at sea, as well as working in America and Scotland, Brian retired as a Rear Admiral having served on the Navy Board.

Explaining why he wants to become a Non-Executive Director at Musgrove, Brian said: “I have lived in Somerset with my family for over 30 years, but as my working life took me away for a lot of my time, it is only now that I have the opportunity to give something back to this lovely county”.

“Having a good background in the leadership of large complex organisations – and in particular with responsibility for delivering operational change - will hopefully be of real benefit to the Board, along with my experience in charities such as the Home Farm Trust, where I learned a great deal about social care and delivering care over a lifetime, not just in short episodes.

“I believe these skills are something which I can employ to work with the rest of the Trust Board to challenge and drive forward change in the Hospital.”

Brian has been the Chief Executive of a leading national charity providing support to people with learning disabilities, The Home Farm Trust, and has held a number of Trusteeships, including currently being a Trustee with the Greenwich Foundation, Somerset Sight and Robert Owen Communities, a trust supporting people with learning disabilities in Devon and Cornwall.

Brian is also a Deputy Lieutenant of Somerset and he and his wife Maggie are keen supporters of the Somerset Community Foundation.

Welcoming Brian to the Hospital, Chairman Rosalinde Wyke said: “Brian has had such a varied career, working first in the Navy before moving to the charitable sector, that I know his expertise across a wide range of areas from corporate governance to finance and personnel management will be invaluable to Musgrove”.

“I truly believe his skills will give added strength to our board and complement the skills of the other Non-Executive Directors to help successfully lead the hospital in these challenging times.”
