Apprenticeships and Work Experience

Apprenticeships

Our apprentices are a real asset to us here at Musgrove. Their talent, enthusiasm and fresh ideas make a really positive contribution to our work. Because we recognise this value and are committed to supporting young people right from the early stages of their career, we offer apprenticeships in a range of different areas of our hospital. Many of these are within a clerical and administrative role, but there are also other non-administrative roles available too. The current list of areas that we are taking apprentices is:

• Healthcare - Nursing

• Healthcare - Maternity

• Healthcare – Theatres (Operating Departments)

• Business Administration

• Clinical Coding

• Customer Service

• Engineering

• Finance

• Information Technology (IT)

• Management

• Medical Information

• Performance and Information

• Sterile Services

Large Employer of the Year Awarded to Musgrove at the Grow Somerset Talent Apprenticeship Awards 2016

Open to employers from all sectors, the Apprenticeship Employer of the Year Award

celebrates employers who can showcase their commitment, contribution and the success that

apprenticeships have brought to their organisation. Judges were looking for exemplar employers who could showcase their ongoing commitment, contribution and the success that apprenticeships have brought to their organisation.

We are always looking to expand this list further and are currently exploring options of apprenticeships in other areas of the hospital also watch this space!

Right now we have over 80 apprentices, each at various stages of their level 2, 3 or 4 programme. These positions are greatly supported by our local colleges - Richard Huish College, Somerset College and Bridgwater College - who work closely with us to recruit students, provide support while they complete their apprenticeship, and help them develop the skills we are specifically looking for. We are incredibly proud of the fact that many of our apprentices go on to become permanently employed colleagues here.

In 2015 we expanded our already successful apprenticeship scheme to healthcare, recruiting 17 Healthcare Apprentices across our Maternity and Theatre departments. Those apprentices have thrived and very quickly become an integral part of their teams.  They are now applying to undertake their Midwifery and Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) training at university and we look forward to welcoming them back as fully trained practitioners in the future. A real example of ‘growing our own’ staff. We are now expanding that scheme further to healthcare apprenticeships within nursing wards to provide valuable training and experience for those who plan to train to become nurses.

The success of our apprenticeships has been celebrated at the 2016 Health Education South West Star Awards where one of our apprentices - Chloe Kearle - won the Higher Apprentice of the Year Award. Find out more about Chloe’s experience as an apprentice here. Chloe has also been shortlisted as a finalist at the Grow Somerset Talent Apprenticeship Awards (result pending

Work Experience

Here at Musgrove we offer a variety of work experience opportunities, to provide young people with an insight into the many different career paths within the NHS.

Pathway to the NHS

For students in year 10 we hold an annual, four day ‘Pathway to the NHS’ work experience programme; which consists of departmental visits, classroom-based learning activities and one day on a ward or in a specialist department. Our ‘Pathway to the NHS’ introduces a variety of different hospital related careers, and lets students see our work in action, to give a real flavour of some of the professions within our hospital. You’ll also get to meet lots of our friendly and supportive staff along the way, who will be happy to answer your questions and share their professional experiences with you.

Our ‘Pathway to the NHS’ work experience programme runs in June or July. Applications can be made through your School Careers Advisor.

Pathway to Maternity, Dietetics, Radiography, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy

For people over the age of 16, we also offer pathway programmes in our Dietetics, Radiography, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy departments. Each of these programmes is individually tailored to the speciality.

We also offer a maternity pathway programme, for people over the age of 18.

If you would like to find out more about these specific pathway programmes, please register your interest by emailing: learning@tst.nhs.uk. We will then contact you with more information.
